Cranbrook School

Curriculum

Although we are a small school, with a personal approach our dynamic and evolving curriculum equips all our students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed at school and beyond.

The school is clearly divided into three key stages, each with a dedicated social area and lead member of staff. However, we take a lot of pride in the way all our students mix freely around the school and make use of the specialist subject classrooms.

The learning objectives for each department is clearly laid out with links to subject overviews available on this page.

Cranbrook School aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which promotes the moral, spiritual, cultural, mental and physical development of all our students.  The curriculum should also prepare our students for the challenges and responsibilities of adult life. We seek to provide choice and encourage independent thinking, providing the tools to succeed in the modern world. Students should be able to maximise their potential and to leave school aware that with ability comes the responsibility to use it for the betterment of all.

Key Stage 3 aims to develop learning power through a broad and engaging curriculum, Key Stage 4 aims to guide all students through the English Baccalaureate and Key Stage 5 aims to help students gain specialist knowledge in their preferred area of studies.

Assessment

Cranbrook’s Assessment Intent:

The Cranbrook Curriculum develops active learners who have empowering leadership and employability skills which enable them to be confident citizens of a global future. In their learning in and out of the classroom, our students develop the qualities of kindness, integrity, curiosity, individuality and aspiration. Their studies teach them how to manage themselves and others, how to think creatively and problem-solve imaginatively. They become academic experts who can draw on a wide breadth of knowledge, experience and skills. Key Stage 3 aims to develop learning power through a broad and engaging curriculum, Key Stage 4 aims to guide all students through the English Baccalaureate and Key Stage 5 aims to help students gain specialist knowledge in their preferred area of studies.

Cranbrook’s Assessment Implementation:

Assessment is meaningful, consistent, and aids active learning. All year groups are formally assessed three times a year in short assessment windows published on our calendar; feedback is accompanied with a review that provides support, guidance, and structure for students to improve as well as to self-reflect on their progress. Results and subject feedback are shared with staff, students and parents electronically and discussed at parents’ evenings. Students engage in Academic Progress Review each term.

  • For further information on previous years performance and clarification on the different measures used, please look at the performance data presented on the Department of Education’s School Performance Tables. Cranbrook School does not receive a Progress 8 score, and therefore the School will not feature in any of the associated league tables. This performance measure shows how much progress pupils at this school made between the end of key stage 2 and the end of key stage 4, compared to pupils across England, who achieved similar results at the end of key stage 2. As typically less than 50% of our Year 11 students have sat KS2 exams, there is not sufficient data for us to receive a Progress 8 score. However, Cranbrook School is extremely proud of the progress of all our students. Our Year 11 and Year 13 students annually outperform CAT and ALPs targets.
