Cranbrook School

School Lodge (Year 9 Boys)

School Lodge fulfils the role of an entrance house for our boarding boys.  Our aim is to welcome new boarders to the Cranbrook community and teach them the ways that will best fulfil their academic and social development.  We strive to develop the sense of self responsibility and independence which will benefit them as they move into the senior part of the school.

The boarding House provides a home for 34 year 9 boys coming from a wide variety of different schools.  As new arrivals, they are able to face the challenges of their new environment together, starting with a comprehensive two day induction at the beginning of September.  The House is an extremely well furnished and comfortable Victorian building and the boys are accommodated within a variety of dorms, ranging from 2 beds through to 10!  Along with the house staff, they share the house with two Gappies (typically one from Australia and one from New Zealand) who try to aid the boys in their new home, showing them the ropes and acting in the role a big brother might.

There are, of course, a set of House rules but these are best defined as a series of reasonable expectations.  They are based upon a common-sense approach to behaviour standards and try to reflect parental expectations at home.  Boys are expected to act responsibly and with courtesy and respect, and this ensures that School Lodge is maintained as the welcoming and comfortable house which it is.

I have been involved in School Lodge and Boarding at Cranbrook ever since joining the school in 2011.  In my opinion it really is the best asset we have.  I have always loved the atmosphere and energy of School Lodge in particular.  Working with boys when they first arrive in the school is incredibly rewarding, especially as it gives you the opportunity to get to know all the boarders who start in year 9.  I live in School lodge with my wife Martha and three children Noah, Oren and Elsa, who are all very much part of the School Lodge family.
