Boarding at Cranbrook

Cranbrook is one of a small number of state grammar schools in the UK offering full boarding. That means we combine academic ambition with a vibrant, values-led boarding experience – and because we are state-funded, we charge no tuition fees. Our boarding fees are also VAT-exempt, making us a highly affordable alternative to the independent sector.

We welcome boarders from Year 9 through to Year 13. Each of our boarding houses is home to around 35–40 students and led by a resident Head of House, supported by tutors and matrons. Students from the UK and overseas live and learn together in a safe, structured and caring environment that fosters independence, character and friendship.

A Supportive & Structured Environment

Students live in small, close-knit houses with a clear routine that balances work, wellbeing and social life. There is always someone to turn to – whether it’s a Head of House, tutor, matron or fellow student. Shared meals, evening prep and quiet time help create rhythm and structure to the day.

From Year 9 onwards, younger boarders benefit from a reassuring and consistent environment, with older students acting as positive role models. From Year 12, sixth form boarders enjoy more independence while still being part of a supportive house community.

A Place to Learn & Grow

Boarders are fully integrated into the academic and co-curricular life of the school. They attend lessons with day students, take part in the same clubs and teams, and have access to additional academic support in the evenings.

Evenings and weekends offer a chance to recharge, try new things and spend time with friends. From sports fixtures and cultural trips to film nights and creative workshops, boarding life is busy, sociable and full of opportunity.
