The Rolvenden Rocket
Local families may be aware of the shortage of a timely bus services in the surrounding villages of Cranbrook; many students would have needed to catch a bus at 6:50am from Rolvenden and then join a return bus at 4:50pm in the darkness of the winter months – quite an exhausting journey for any young person.
One of the Cranbrook parents, Ann, who was worried about her son taking on this daunting journey, contacted the Rolvenden Parish Council to ask if they would be interested in providing a school service to Cranbrook School. The parish council have the use of a 15-seated mini bus called the Rolvenden Rocket. The council agreed as the funding will ensure the Rocket is available to the local community for days out for the foreseeable future.
The Rocket starts from Rolvenden and picks up eight children from Rolvenden and then stops in Benenden to pick up two children. En route to Cranbrook School, the Rocket drops off one child to Dulwich Prep and then continues on to Cranbrook School to drop off the remaining children.
The bus is driven by volunteers who have a CRB certificate, and the students say are very nice. The project has run smoothly from its inception in September 2019, thanks in part to the parents who communicate regularly to ensure the volunteers know if someone is ill, not returning on the bus or if there are any traffic problems.
There are currently seven available seats. The allocation will be on a first come first served basis and the price will be competitive with the Young Persons bus pass offered by KCC. Please email Lee to book your seat or ask a question regarding the service: firstname.lastname@example.org
