Success in new-look GCSEs – 56% A* or Level 7-9

Cranbrook students returning from their holidays are celebrating a good crop of GCSEs following the publication of results this week.  The school achieved 55.75% A*-A (including new Level 7-9s). New GCSEs in Maths and English have proved tougher, but overall standards have remained constant or even improved.

Headmaster John Weeds commented, “Despite the uncertainty nationally, Cranbrook students and staff can be proud of their performance at GCSE this summer.  The new exams in English and Maths are clearly tougher, but our students have risen to the challenge very well indeed.  Twelve students achieved nine or more A*s and/or Level 8-9s – a very high success rate indeed.  In the new-look, high-rigour Maths and English GCSEs our students excelled, with 11% achieving Level 9s in English on top of a 100% pass rate. English and Maths both achieved over 50% Level 7 and up or the equivalent – a remarkable success.  Coming after all the changes at A-level, our teachers deserve huge credit for introducing new courses at GCSE too – and succeeding so well with them too.”
