Cranbrook School - Respect Aspire Achieve

Junior Prizegiving

We held our first ever Junior Prizegiving event on Friday 21st June.

Following the school’s change of age range in 2016, this  was the first time pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 were able to come together to celebrate their own achievements and at a the same time enjoy the blossoming musical life at the school. The best of what the school has to offer was clearly on display on a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. Guest speaker, Sufiya Ahmed – author of teen fiction best seller The Secrets of the Henna Girl – gave an inspiring talk at the event of the need to follow one’s dreams and to never give up.

Earlier in the day, Sufiya had spent a lot of time with Year 7 and Year 8 pupils focussing on creative writing and the life of a parliamentary researcher (her chosen field before going into writing). Music on offer really spanned the generations  – Debussy, Brahms and Tarrega on the on hand to Sam Smith, The Clash and George Ezra on the other. All of it performed superbly by students Milos and Louis Foy (Years 7 and 9), the Year 7 Singing Group, Year 7 rock outfit Distracted, Year 8 drummers, The Djembes, Year 9 band Bombinate, Year 9 classical guitarist Pablo Garcia.

As Head John Weeds put it, “All in all an excellent first ever Junior Prizegiving. All  our junior pupils have performed well and provided us with a really fitting celebration to mark our first complement of Years 7,8 and 9.It just goes to show what a successful change this was for the school.”
