In its philosophy the Religious Education Department is committed to embodying the mission of the school in the way in which it pursues its activities, and more specifically to aiding our pupils to become confident, self-valuing and other-valuing, inquisitive, sensitive individuals, able to manage disagreement and to value others; to enter imaginatively the value-commitments of others while forming their own values and beliefs at a level of critical understanding appropriate to their intellectual and emotional development; to be so informed about some parts of the variety of religions of humankind as to be equipped conceptually and in terms of skills to pursue their explorations further as opportunity arises or occasion requires.
We believe that it should be, and seek to ensure that it is the case, that in their years at the school each pupil should:
• gain some understanding of a world faith other than Christianity; • explore a number of areas of personal and social morality in the light of the resources provided by the Christian tradition; • enjoy the opportunity to reflect on their own understanding of religious and moral issues; • learn to listen to others, and to handle disagreements about matters of importance; • find a voice to express their own commitments in the confidence that these are valued.
We seek to make increasing use of ICT facilities, using the Internet for research, and working at developing the use of Powerpoint by pupils. A new computer-linked projector in our only dedicated classroom is providing exciting opportunities, and in time we hope to move to an interactive Smartboard.
