The Performing Arts Centre was opened on 24th September 2004 and quickly became a hive of artistic and creative endeavour. Central to the PAC is the Vickers' Auditorium (named after Tony Vickers, the Music Department's most munificent benefactor). This Auditorium has excellent acoustical properties and is used by the School's larger ensembles and local groups. It also doubles as a recording studio and two commercial CDs have already been recorded therein making use of the professionally-equipped Control Room which houses a large Allen and Heath mixing desk, Hard Drive, CD and Minidisc recorders plus a sophisticated collection of accessories and specialist software.
The Control Room links directly to the Music Classroom where there are 16 computer workstations housing MIDI keyboards and PCs running Sibelius 4 notation software, Cubase Studio Software plus interactive whiteboard.
The Resources Room is home to the well stocked library of scores, CDs and DVDs and other equipment.
There are seven teaching rooms all equipped with a piano and designed to have excellent acoustics. These include a Percussion Studio and Raynor Room. The Raynor Room contains a Yamaha C3 Grand Piano, a single manual Harpsichord, a chest of Viols and a comprehensive library of chamber and ensemble music.
There are two generous instrument storage rooms and a kitchen, the latter being especially popular among the 18 music staff.
The Performing Arts Centre has already hosted a good number of musical events, including lunchtime concerts given by the school's musicians, celebrity recitals, musical soirees, rehearsals by Wind Quartets and Octets, composing workshops with players from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, piano recitals, auditions for musicals in addition to the regular pattern of weekly orchestral, wind band, jazz and choir rehearsals.
