Cranbrook School's Music Department plays an important part in the cultural life of the School. There are two full time academic staff and eighteen visiting instrumental teachers. 28% of the student population receives individual music lessons in school and many others develop their musical interests and talents elsewhere.
The Department moved into new purpose-designed facilities in May 2004 and it is now a busy, vibrant, artistic hub. The Vickers' Auditorium serves as both rehearsal, concert and recording venue. The Music Classroom boasts computers running Sibelius Notation Software. There are a further seven tuition rooms, a fully-stocked music resource/library room, kitchen, office and plentiful storage areas.
Every pupil is encouraged to take up an instrument and to participate fully in the extensive extra-curricular music activities. These included an Orchestra, Wind Band, Choir, Jazz Combo, Recorder Ensemble, Flute Choir, Close Harmony Chorale, fifteen rock bands and an assortment of other ad hoc groupings.
A regular series of lunchtime and evening concerts reinforces the important work undertaken on a daily and weekly basis in rehearsal. Several students each year move on to music degree courses. We have representatives in both county and national ensembles.
