Mathematics Key Stage 4/GCSE
The teaching blocks in Years 10 and 11 are similar to those in Year 9: two parallel blocks of three sets, in which all three sets of each block sit the Higher Tier specification (A* is the maximum awarded grade and D is the minimum awarded grade).
At Key Stage 4, we study the OCR GCSE course, Mathematics A (Linear Assessment J512). Typically all of the school's candidature takes the Higher Tier, although the Foundation Tier is available to those candidates who are deemed unlikely to achieve a C on the Higher Tier course.
The terminal examination consists of two 2-hour written papers (one with and one without use of a calculator) each worth 50% of the final grade. Please note that from September 2008, there will no longer be a coursework component in GCSE Mathematics.
Throughout the GCSE course the students' progress is continually monitored with regular testing and mock examinations. We expect students in Set 1 to achieve mostly A* and A grades, those in Set 2 to gain mostly A grades and Set 3 candidates to achieve mostly B grades. From September 2007, students in the two top Year 10 sets will sit their GCSE Mathematics examination early in January 2009. These students will then go on to complete an additional GCSE in Statistics (AQA 3311) in June 2009.
The GCSE Mathematics results for 2005 to 2008 were:
2008: 65% A*-A grades; 100% A*-C grades [21 (A*), 72 (A), 41 (B), 10 (C)]
2007: 46% A*-A grades; 98% A*-C grades [19 (A*), 52 (A), 52 (B), 28 (C), 2 (D), 1 (U)]
2006: 53% A*-A grades; 99% A*-C grades [25 (A*), 57 (A), 56 (B), 16 (C), 1 (U)]
2005: 35% A*-A grades, 97% A*-C grades [16 (A*), 35 (A), 50 (B), 41 (C), 4 (D)]

The teaching blocks in Years 10 and 11 are similar to those in Year 9: two parallel blocks of three sets, in which all three sets of each block sit the higher tier GCSE specification (A* is the maximum awarded grade and D is the minimum awarded grade).

At Key Stage 4, we study the OCR GCSE course, mathematics A (modular assessment J562). Typically all of the school's candidature takes the higher tier, although the foundation tier is available to those candidates who are deemed unlikely to achieve a C on the higher tier course.

The modular examination consists of two 1-hour written papers and one 2-hour written paper. Please note that there is no coursework component nor controlled assessment in GCSE mathematics. The first unit (A) is worth 25% and is taken in Year 9. The second unit (B) is a non-calculator exam also worth 25% and this is taken during Year 10. The final unit (C) is the terminal exam and is worth 50% of the final grade and is taken during Year 11. Please note that all the units may be retaken once only with the better mark going forward.
Throughout the GCSE course progress is continually monitored with regular testing and mock examinations. We expect students in set 1 to achieve mostly A* and A grades, those in set 2 to gain mostly A grades and set 3 candidates to achieve mostly B grades. The students in the two top Year 10 sets sit their GCSE mathematics examination early in June of Year 10. These students will then go on to complete an additional GCSE in Statistics (AQA 4310) and the IGCSE in Further Mathematics (AQA).
The GCSE Mathematics results for 2005 to 2011 were:
2011: 83% A*-A grades; 100% A*-B grades [73 (A*), 43 (A), 23 (B)]
2010: 78% A*-A grades; 99% A*-C grades [53 (A*), 61 (A), 27 (B), 5 (C), 1 (D)]
2009: 78% A*-A grades; 100% A*-C grades [44 (A*), 68 (A), 28 (B), 3 (C)]
2008: 65% A*-A grades; 100% A*-C grades [21 (A*), 72 (A), 41 (B), 10 (C)]
2007: 46% A*-A grades; 98% A*-C grades [19 (A*), 52 (A), 52 (B), 28 (C), 2 (D), 1 (U)]
2006: 53% A*-A grades; 99% A*-C grades [25 (A*), 57 (A), 56 (B), 16 (C), 1 (U)]
2005: 35% A*-A grades; 97% A*-C grades [16 (A*), 35 (A), 50 (B), 41 (C), 4 (D)]
The GCSE Statistics results for 2009 to 2011 were:
2011: 88% A*-A grades; 100% A*-C grades [13 (A*), 32 (A), 5 (B), 1 (C)]
2010: 91% A*-A grades; 100% A*-C grades [23 (A*), 25 (A), 4 (B), 1 (C)]
2009: 90% A*-A grades; 100% A*-C grades [18 (A*), 27 (A), 5 (B)]
The 2011 GCSE Mathematics results for the two top sets in Year 10 were:
2011: 100% A*-A grades [51 (A*), 10 (A)]
The 2011 GCSE Mathematics module results for unit A and B in Year 10 sets 2 and 3 were:
2011: 65% A*-A grades; 100% A*-C grades [14 (A*), 48 (A), 29 (B), 5 (C)]
