Mathematics is a popular subject for A level students at Cranbrook, but students also realise that Mathematics at this level is a demanding discipline. They are, therefore, required to achieve a minimum of a B grade on the Higher tier GCSE specification, although A* and A grades are preferable, to begin the AS course.
We study the OCR Mathematics A modular course, which enables our students to take a broad combination of modules in Pure (Core) Mathematics, Mechanics, Statistics and Discrete Mathematics leading to AS or A2 in either Mathematics or Further Mathematics. Typically, between 50 and 55 students embark on the AS course (3 modules) in Year 12, and a significant number generally continue onto the A2 course (6 modules) in Year 13. The ablest of our student Mathematicians work in accelerated classes on the Further Mathematics courses (9 or 12 modules).
The AS Mathematics results for 2005 to 2008 were:
2008: 31% A-B grades [1 (A). 3 (B), 5 (C), 2 (D), 2 (E)]
2007: 14% A-B grades [1 (A), 2 (C), 4 (D)]
2006: 30% A-B grades [1 (A), 2 (B), 2 (C), 2 (D), 3 (E)]
