Languages Key Stage 3

French is taught in sets to almost all students in Year 9. This is the  key year in which we consolidate, and expand upon a students prior  knowledge, through a wide variety of experiences, in preparation for  the GCSE studies in Years 10 and 11. Students have two lessons and  one prep per week and are given appropriately differentiated tasks.  We focus on the 4 skills of listening, reading and speaking and writing  and regular significant assessments take place. Metro 4 Rouge is the text book  used, supplemented by a wealth of other materials. Resources used include  audio and video cassettes, DVD cassettes, CDs and information technology.

German and Spanish are  currently offered as a second language for 3 periods weekly,  in four teaching groups, for both beginners and more experienced students.  For two groups of students Latin for complete beginners is given as  an alternative. Listos (Spanish) and Logo (German) are the text books used.  The Key Stage 3 course aims to offer an introduction to the German  language and culture.

Spanish can also be chosen as a students first foreign language in Year 9 (instead of French) with German or Latin being their second choice.

There is a bi-annual Year 9/10 French exchange with a school in Lille and we have a lower school e-mail link with Volx in southern France.
