French German and Spanish are all offered to A S and A 2 levels at Cranbrook School. The Welsh Examination Board (WJEC) is used for all 3 languages and the topics covered are the same in which ever language. These are:
AS level: Education, Work and Future Plans, Sport and Leisure Young People and Their Problems, Travel and Tourism
A2 level: Contemporary France, Germany, Spain (and French/German /Spanish speaking countries). The Media, films and/or literature texts The Environment and Conservation.
The text books used are: French: Tout Droit, Droit au But, Zenith, Mot ˆa Mot, French Grammar Practice, Elan 1 & 2. German: Etappen, Ziele. Spanish: Sigue 1, Sigue 2, An Advanced Spanish Grammar, Palabra por Palabra, Animos 1 & 2, Ponte al Dia
All three languages are popular AS and A 2 subjects, both for those wishing to read languages at university and for those wishing to broaden their linguistic studies. A language can combine well with any A level subject.
French and Spanish assistants help with oral work in Y12 and 13 and all speaking examinations are conducted by an external examiner.
We hope that students will read around their subject(s) as much as possible, and links with, and trips to, the target language countries are encouraged. Indeed, Cranbrook School, now has a vibrant science link with the Lycee de L'Escaut in Valenciennes and an active exchange with St Jean de Luz in South West France.
