New entrants to the school can opt to start Latin as beginners in Year 9. Any students who have a lot of previous experience of Latin have the opportunity to continue Latin in an experienced group. All students can choose to take Latin as a GCSE option.
The Department follows the very popular Cambridge Latin Course and all its excellent resources for teaching. The Classics classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard which is ideal for using the CLC’s DVD Rom resources and website to support learning.
During the course of the year students learn the Latin language together with Roman culture in three lessons per week. Book 1 of the course is set in Pompeii, the city destroyed by Vesuvius in 79AD. Students explore topics such as Roman housing, food and gladiators. From Pompeii, Book 2 takes the students to Roman Britain as they progress with the language. Normally students reach Stage 15 within the first year.
Experienced Latinists on arrival usually study Books 2 and 3 during Year 9. We assess students using the Cambridge Latin Course attainment tests and their National Graded Test Scheme.
Each year over 30 students both beginners and experienced opt to continue their Latin studies to GCSE level.
