Students at Cranbrook School held their own election on May 6th to determine who should lead the country.
In a bid to combat the reported ‘voter apathy’ amongst younger voters, Cranbrook School ran a mini-general election on Thursday. Sixth form students represented 4 parties – Charly Cooper for Labour, Alex Latham for the Conservatives, Charlotte Cunningham and Gabriel Harrison for the Liberal Democrats and John Warmington for the Green Party – and, together with their teams, ran campaigns featuring speeches in assemblies, extensive poster campaigns (some very imaginative!) and ‘meeting the voters’ in order listen to their concerns and to win their vote.
Turnout was very good - beating the young voter turnout in 2005 General Election – and led to a Conservative victory gaining 36.6% of the vote with the Liberal Democrats finished second with 30.7% and the Green Party a creditable third with 16.2%. Praise must go to the candidates and their teams for being so enthusiastic in their campaigning and also thanks to everyone that voted.
