Year 9 students enter Cranbrook with widely differing experiences of Art. From the beginning each unit of work starts from a whole class thematic analysis (Art Study) using relevant artist(s) or movements on the chronological scale. Individual students then create their own art form from this shared beginning. The laminated photocopies with analysis and questions on the back are central, laying the foundations for their increasingly sophisticated use by older students.
The main areas of study are the Gothic-Renaissance, Romanticism and English Landscape. Students discover ways of drawing and recording, spending some early lessons in the local parish church. They are also introduced to the ideas behind critical and contextual study. The methods that they use in Year 9 include drawing and painting; relief printing (woodcut); relief sculpture and an introduction to ICT.
